Chapter 02 · Key paper

Koreans care more about the heart behind an action — simjeong (심정) — than the action itself, and the author argues that jeong (정) and han (한) can only be understood through this psychology of the heart.

The Simjeong Psychology of Koreans: A Phenomenological Understanding of Jeong (情) and Han (恨)

QUESTION

How are jeong and han related to Koreans’ psychology of simjeong, examined phenomenologically?

FINDINGS

Koreans value the motive or inner feeling behind an action more than the visible action, and weigh it heavily when interpreting behavior.

When someone close lets you down, you say, “How could they do that to me?” — blaming behavior that falls short of what a given relationship should bring.

In depth

In depth

This paper, more closely — every sentence carries an original quote and page number.

Background

The paper starts from the view that Western psychology, focused on objectively analyzing the behavior of independent individuals, does not fit Koreans, who define themselves through relationships and respond sensitively to others’ inner feelings.

Western psychology of Westerners, focused on objectively analyzing the behavior of a single independent individual…p3

To say “Koreans have much jeong and deep han,” the author notes, one must first be able to explain what kind of psychology jeong and han are.

To say that Koreans have much jeong and deep han, one must first be able to say what phenomenon jeong is and what state of mind han is…p8

Method

Not a new data study: a theoretical paper that gathers the author’s earlier surveys on jeong, “we,” han, and related concepts and examines jeong and han phenomenologically.

No separate participants (a summary of the author’s earlier survey findings).
Building on separate analyses of Korean words such as jeong, face, nunchi, excuses, and han, the author looked for links and shared mechanisms among them and derived the concept of “simjeong psychology.”

Here, centering on the results of these studies, we will summarize and review the empirical and phenomenal features of jeong and han.p13

이차적 종합분석을 통해 필자는 『한국인의 심정심리』라는 개념을 도출해 내게 되었다…through this secondary synthetic analysis the author arrived at the concept of 'Koreans' simjeong psychology.'p9

Detailed findings

Koreans lean heavily toward locating the cause of behavior in a person’s heart rather than the environment, so they bear heavier blame for wrongdoing than warranted — which is why excuses developed as a coping mechanism.

Koreans place absolutely greater weight on the heart-determinism of behavior than on environmental determinism…p6
이러한 상황에서 발달된 심리 기제의 하나가 핑계이다…they bear a heavier load of responsibility than they ought to. One psychological mechanism that developed in this situation is pinggye (excuse-making).p6

Inferring inner feelings always leaves room for error, so heart-focused Koreans see much misunderstanding and misreading — and many explanations and excuses to clear them up.

Simjeong-oriented Koreans have many misunderstandings and misinterpretations.p6
There is always room for misunderstanding in understanding the inner psychology behind another's behavior…p6
At the same time there are many explanations and many excuses to clear up these misunderstandings.p6

Han is a mixed state of partial acceptance (“I have no power, so what can I do”) and partial denial (“Is it right to be wronged just because I have no power?”).

Han is a compound state of partial acceptance (because I have no power) and partial denial (is it right that one must suffer just because one has no power?).p7

Respondents named lack of honesty, showing off, and selfish calculation as traits of people with whom jeong is hard to form — the opposite of family traits, which the author takes as showing that jeong starts from the family.

Their content is lack of frankness, self-display, selfish calculation, and so on.p13
Korean respondents described the traits of people with whom jeong is hard to form in three categories…p13
Since these traits are directly opposite to the traits of family relationships, it can easily be inferred that jeong starts from family relationships.p13

Jeong cannot be made on purpose; it forms unnoticed over long contact, like clothes getting wet in a drizzle — and trying to create it drives it away.

이슬비에 웃이 젖듯 자신도 모르는 사이에 들게 된다는 것이다…it forms without one knowing, like clothes getting wet in a drizzle.p14
Jeong cannot be made artificially; it forms by itself over a long period of contact…p14
If one tries to create jeong, it rather runs away.p14

Kindness looks kinder the more intentional it is, but jeong differs: it is not an intention but a state of heart that arises on its own.

Kindness is a matter of attitude or intention toward a particular person; jeong refers not to attitude or intention but to a particular self-arising state of heart.p14
Rather, the more intentional it is, the kinder the behavior is perceived to be.p14

Jeong also differs from Japanese giri (義理), which carries duty and obligation; jeong is a spontaneous feeling that runs opposite to duty and responsibility.

한국의 情은 의무나 책임과는 상극의 방향에 있는 자생적 심리상태란 점에서…in that Korean jeong is a spontaneous psychological state lying in the opposite direction from duty or responsibility.p15
Japanese giri carries obligation and has the character of human feeling tied to responsibilities given externally within an institutionalized system.p15

Han arises when one suffers unfair discrimination, when one suffers from lacking what one needs far more than others, and when one makes a great, irreversible mistake.

First, when one receives unfair discriminatory treatment; second, when one suffers from a marked lack of what one needs compared to others…p15
세째 돌이킬 수 없는 큰 실수를 범했을 때 발생한다…and third, when one has made a big mistake that cannot be undone.p15

Authors’ interpretation

If the “currency” of American relationships is behavior, the currency of Korean relationships is the heart.

If the interpersonal currency of Americans is behavior, the interpersonal currency of Koreans is the heart.p9

Because Koreans judge others within relationships, an insider’s “psychology from within” fits better than a third-party “psychology from without” — and in it, the other’s objective traits matter little.

In the psychology from within, what objective traits the other has does not matter much.p11
타인을 제 3 자로 파악하여 객관적으로 평가하는 〈제 3 자…'third-party psychology,' which sees others as third parties and evaluates them objectively…p11
Psych010Ü from within〉이 더욱 적합할 수 있다…'insider psychology (psychology from within)' may be more fitting.p11

The author reads Korea’s demand that Japan apologize over the “comfort women” issue — while declaring no material compensation is wanted — as a psychological demand that the party who caused the han acknowledge it, which he calls distinctly Korean.

恨 유발의 당사자로 하여금 한국인의 恨을 인정하라는 심리적 요구이며 이러한 요구는 극히 한국적이다…it is a psychological demand that the party who caused the han acknowledge Koreans’ han, and such a demand is extremely Korean.p12
