Chapter 02 · Key paper

Through everyday examples, folk tales, and scenario experiments, the study found that Koreans believe enduring hardship (ingo, 인고) brings rewards and can even pay off one’s wrongdoing.

Psychology of Ingo for Koreans: Accompaniment of Rewards and Reimbursement of Faults

QUESTION

How do Koreans perceive ingo (인고, enduring suffering) — the expectation that endurance brings rewards, and the belief that it cancels out one’s faults?

FINDINGS

In both everyday cases and folk tales, endurance varied in whether it was intended and whom it was for, but its outcome was mostly judged to be positive.

On the outcome dimension, most cases of endurance were judged to bring positive results.p13
인고사례들이 의 도적•비의도적 차원과 자기-타인지향 차원에서 다로 게 나타났지만…endurance cases differed on the intentional–unintentional and self–other-oriented dimensions, but…p13
Studies 1 and 2 analyzed everyday endurance cases and the contents of Korean folk tales.p13

Participants saw a good result won through endurance as more valuable and deserved than one won without it, and saw endurance itself as more meaningful.

비인고보다는 인고에 따른 긍정적 결과를 더 정당하고 가치 있으며, 인고가 비인고보다 전반적으로 더 의의있는 행동으로 지각하였다…perceived positive results following endurance as more deserved and valuable than those following non-endurance, and endurance as overall more meaningful behavior than non-endurance.p1

When a bad result followed endurance, it was felt to be more unfair, and people understood and sympathized more with the person involved.

Negative results occurring under the endurance condition were perceived as more unfair than under non-endurance, and at such times raters understood and sympathized more with the person, at the level of the heart.p1

People feel that someone who endured suffering caused by their own fault should have their responsibility reduced or waived — humane on a personal level, but potentially harmful to the fairness and equity of the law.

과실 후의 인고여부가 책임추궁이나 처 벌에 영향을 미치는 것이 때로 법의 공정성과 처벌 의 형평성을 침해할 수도 있다…letting whether someone endured after a fault influence holding them responsible or punishing them may at times violate the fairness of the law and the equity of punishment.p15
과실을 범한 개인이 그 과실로 인한 고통을 감수하고 인고의 시 간을 보낸 경우 그 개인에게 과실에 대한 법적인 책 임을 감하거나 면제해 주어야 한다고 인식하고…perceive that when a person who committed a fault bears the suffering from it and goes through a time of endurance, the legal responsibility for the fault should be reduced or waived…p15
Sympathizing with and feeling compassion for someone who endures may be very humane and desirable at the personal level, but…p15

Even simply bearing hardship like fate (sunmyeong-ingo, 순명-인고) was felt to deserve some reward.

단순히 운명처럼 인고하는 것만으로도 어떤 보상을 받아야 한다는 그들의 인고보상심리를 잘 보여준다.…well shows their psychology of reward for endurance: that merely enduring as if it were fate should earn some kind of reward.p13

IN DAILY LIFE

“Devotion-endurance” (jeongseong-ingo, 정성-인고): a mother’s dawn prayers for her child’s success, a mother who stays up at night with her child in the last year of high school, a businessperson holding a gosa (고사) ritual.

자식의 성 공을 위해서 어머니가 하는 새벽기도 고 3 자식과 함께 밤잠을 안자는 어머니, 사업하는 사람의 고사지 내기…a mother’s dawn prayers for her child’s success, a mother who stays up nights together with her high-school senior, a businessperson holding a gosa ritual…p8

The closer a friend is to someone in mourning, the longer they stay at the funeral house through the night — and the mourner gauges the friend’s heart by how long they stay.

The closer and dearer a friend is to the one in mourning, the longer they stay at the funeral house, staying up through the night.p14
The bereaved person, in turn, gauges the friend's feelings toward them by how long the friend stays.p14

A person in the wrong saying “I said I was sorry, didn’t I?”, “Isn’t that enough?”, or “I’ve put up with as much as I can” — treating their endurance as payment for the wrong.

“내가 미안하다고 그랬잖아 요”, “그만하면 되었지 월 더 어떻게 하라고 그래요” “나도 참을 만큼 참았잖아요”“I told you I was sorry, didn’t I?”, “That’s enough — what more do you want me to do?”, “I’ve put up with as much as I could, haven’t I?”p8
당사자 는 자신이 인고한 것으로 잘못을 갚았다고 생각하고 있음이 잘 드러난다…it is clear that the person thinks they have repaid the wrong by having endured.p8
Caveats — Based on a scanned original converted to text; numbers appear only where a quoted passage shows them. The authors themselves note that their effort–endurance scenario was flawed.
In depth

In depth

This paper, more closely — every sentence carries an original quote and page number.

Background

Traditionally, Korean self-cultivation began with enduring pain — yet the authors see today’s Korean society as having grown strongly oriented toward pleasure and material things, wanting needs met right away.

Traditionally, for Koreans, self-cultivation begins with bearing suffering.p2
자신의 다양한 욕구를 즉 각적으로 최대한 만족시키고자 하는 쾌락지향적 경 향을 강하게 드러냈다…strongly showed a pleasure-oriented tendency to satisfy their various desires immediately and to the fullest.p2
물질지 상주의는 적어도 겉으로 드러난 한국인의 삶을 지배 하는 가장 강력한 이데올로기가 되고 있다…materialism is becoming the most powerful ideology governing, at least outwardly, the lives of Koreans.p2

Still, ingo (enduring hardship) is a universal concept rooted deep in Korean life, so Koreans may keep a way of judging that values endurance even while seeming to chase pleasure — checking this is the study’s starting point.

The sentiment of ingo, as a universal concept deeply rooted in Koreans’ lives…p3
Even if Koreans' behavior today is strongly materialistic and pleasure-oriented, they may still have a judgment system that values endurance.p3
From this standpoint, this study sought to explore in various ways how Koreans perceive endurance.p3

Method

Three studies: Study 1 analyzed everyday endurance cases written by university students, Study 2 the endurance in Korean folk tales, and Study 3 judgments of hypothetical scenarios.

Study 1: 36 university students. Study 2: 97 university students (rating 20 folk tales). Study 3: 262 students at three universities in Seoul.
In Studies 1–2, the endurance was classified as intended or not, for oneself or for others, and as having a good or bad outcome (in Study 1 the researchers judged the outcome). In Study 3, for each of four types of endurance participants read one “endured” and one “did not endure” story — eight in all — and answered on 7-point scales.

As experimental materials, this study used eight hypothetical scenarios related to the four types of endurance.p9

97 university students (36 men, 61 women) took part in Study 2.p5

고통의 발생원인과 관련해서 의도적 대 비 의도적 차원, 인고의 목적이 누구를 위한 것인지와 관련해서 자기지향 대 타인지향 차원에서 이분법적 으로 평가하도록 하였다…had them rate each case dichotomously on intentional vs. unintentional (regarding the cause of suffering) and self- vs. other-oriented (regarding whom the endurance was for).p3
연구자들은 각 기술문을 읽고 결과가 긍정적인 지 부정적인지를 판단하여…the researchers read each description and judged whether the outcome was positive or negative…p3
긍정적 결과•부정적 차원 각각에서 이 분법적으로 평가하였다…rated dichotomously on each of [these dimensions, including] positive vs. negative outcome.p6
For each endurance type, two scenarios were made, one for the endurance condition and one for the non-endurance condition.p9
모든 측정은 Likert형 7점 척도(1점 전혀 그렇지 않은All measures were on a 7-point Likert scale (1 = not at all …)p10

Detailed findings

The everyday endurance cases students recalled varied in intent and in whom they served, but very few ended badly.

긍정적-부정적 결과 차원에서는 범주간의 차이가 심해 부정적 결과가 상대적으로 매우 적었다는 사실이다…on the positive-negative outcome dimension the gap between categories was large, so negative outcomes were relatively very few.p4
Compared with the intentional–unintentional and self–other-oriented dimensions, on the positive–negative outcome dimension…p4

Endurance in folk tales, likewise, was judged to lead almost always to good outcomes.

Ratings split for “Gyeonu and Jiknyeo” (the Herdsman and the Weaver); the authors suggest many participants felt one meeting a year was not enough to make up for the pain of separation.

상당수의 참가자들은 일 년에 한 번의 만남이 이별의 고통을 보상하기에는 불충분하여…a considerable number of participants may have felt that meeting once a year was insufficient to compensate for the pain of separation…p7
(50.5%) rated it negative, showing the lowest agreement among raters.p6

In “devotion-endurance” (like dawn prayers), a good result was seen as more valuable after endurance, but endurance did not raise the perceived chance of a good result.

There was also no significant difference by endurance in the likelihood of bringing a positive result.p11
A positive outcome was seen as more valuable and just in the endurance condition than in the non-endurance condition.p11
For a long time they have been offering dawn prayers or Buddhist offerings every morning for their child's success.p9

In “fate-acceptance endurance,” where one simply bears it, participants still saw endurance very positively and felt it alone deserved a reward.

Koreans perceive endurance itself quite positively…p13
단순히 운명처럼 인고하는 것만으로도 어떤 보상을 받아야 한다는 그들의 인고보상심리를 잘 보여준다…clearly shows their endurance–reward psychology: merely enduring like fate should bring some reward.p13

In “fault-endurance,” after wrongdoing, even with the same fault, how much responsibility is lifted can depend on whether the person suffered and bore it inwardly.

당사자가 그러한 과실로 인해 심리적으로 고통을 경험하여 감내하는지의 여부에 따라 그에 따른 책임을 면하는 정도가 달라질 수 있다…the degree to which one is relieved of responsibility can differ depending on whether the person psychologically experiences and bears suffering because of that fault.p13
That is, even if the degree of fault is the same, [depending on whether] the person, because of that fault…p13

The authors read this as meaning that, in making up for a wrong, one’s inner attitude counts for more than simply accepting punishment imposed from outside.

단순히 외적 으로 주어지는 처벌을 감수하는 것보다 심리적인 마 음 자세가 더 중요함을 시사한다…suggests that the psychological attitude of the heart is more important than simply accepting externally imposed punishment.p13

Outcomes were not ignored: how meaningful endurance seemed depended on whether the result was good or bad, and gaining a good result through endurance was rated most desirable.

인고행동의 의 의 정도는 그런 행동이 가져오는 결과의 긍정성과 부정성에 따라 영향을 받았다…the degree of meaningfulness of enduring behavior was influenced by the positivity or negativity of the results it brought.p14
However, valuing endurance does not seem to mean Koreans ignore the outcomes of behavior altogether.p14
기본 적으로 인고의 과정을 통해서 긍정적 결과를 획득하 는 것을 가장 바람직한 것으로 평가하는 경향이…basically tended to rate obtaining a positive outcome through a process of endurance as the most desirable.p14

Authors’ interpretation

Devotion-endurance matters between people too: sincerely doing what others find hard and unpleasant becomes a measure of one’s care, building and keeping relationships.

진심으 로 남이 하기 어렵고 하기 싫어하는 것을 하는 것…sincerely doing what others find hard to do and dislike doing.p14
The degree of endurance can also serve as a measure of how much one cares for the other.p14
이러한 인고가 한국인이 대인관계 를 형성하고 유지하는데 중요하게 관여하고 있다고…such endurance plays an important part in how Koreans form and maintain relationships.p14

The expectation that mere endurance will be rewarded reflects, the authors argue, a Korean worldview in which fortune and misfortune turn in cycles (as in saeongjima, 새옹지마, and gojingamnae, 고진감래).

Expressions like gojingamnae (when bitterness ends, sweetness comes) also reflect well Koreans’ perception that fortune and misfortune in life occur in cycles.p15
Koreans' expectation that resignation-endurance will bring a positive reward seems to reflect their worldview.p15
Sayings such as saeongjima (the old man's horse) and gojingamrae (after bitterness comes sweetness) also…p15

If post-fault endurance affects how the law is applied, exceptions to the law multiply — so the authors say whether to withhold punishment because someone has reformed needs rethinking.

If whether one endured after a fault affects the enforcement of the law on that fault…p16
에 예외적인 경우를 양산하는 상황을 초래하게 된다…would result in mass-producing exceptions [in the application of the law].p16
Whether it is right to suspend legal punishment because a person is likely to be, or has been, rehabilitated is a question that should be reconsidered.p16

Limits the authors note

The effort-endurance scenario emphasized ability in the “non-endurance” version, letting ability creep in, so it was not suitable for showing the effect of endurance.

시나리오는 노력-인고유형에서 인 고여부가 행동판단에 미치는 영향을 보이는데 적절 하지 못한 것으로 판단된다…the scenario is judged not suitable for showing the effect of endurance on behavioral judgment in the effort-endurance type.p12
This seems to be because the ability emphasized in the non-endurance condition acted as a confounding variable in comparing the two conditions.p12

There was only one scenario per type of endurance, so the many situations in which each type can occur were not covered.

시나리오 의 수는 하나였기 때문에 특정 인고유형이 발생할 수 있는 다양한 맥락을 취급하지 못했다…since the number of scenarios was one, we could not handle the various contexts in which a particular type of endurance can occur.p14
