Shows that cultural psychology can coexist with mainstream psychology, and proposes research methods suited to it: experiments, social representations, discourse analysis, and analysis of activity.

Methodology in Cultural Psychology

문화심리학적 연구방법론

최상진, 한규석 (—). 문화심리학적 연구방법론. 한국심리학회지: 사회 및 성격, Vol. 14, No. 2, 123~144.

QUESTION

Where does cultural psychology stand relative to cross-cultural and indigenous psychology, what are its epistemological features and branches, and which research methods fit it (transformed experiments, social representations, discourse and narrative analysis, analysis of social activity, and cultural-psychological comparison)?

FINDINGS

When comparing cultures, the authors argue for a qualitative “cultural-psychological comparison” — first understanding each culture on its own terms, then comparing — rather than quantitative cross-cultural methods.

비교문화%ross-cultural) 방법보다는 질적 접근을 취占는 문화심리학적 비교연구법…a cultural-psychological comparative method (comparative culture studies) that takes a qualitative approach, rather than the cross-cultural methodp1

이들 이해를 바탕으로 문화를 서로 비교 하는 관점을 취해야 한다should take the perspective of comparing cultures on the basis of these understandingsp18

They note active indigenous-psychology efforts in Korea to build a psychology of Koreans by turning jeong, chemyeon (체면), pinggye (핑계), nunchi (눈치), simjeong (심정), and han (한) into psychological concepts.

Citing experiments by the “Culture and Cognition” team showing East Asians (including Koreans) think holistically and Americans analytically, they argue this shakes mainstream psychology’s assumption that cognitive processes are universal.

They criticize the “Western independent self vs. Eastern interdependent self” theory as a counter-concept built on the Western self, and introduce work proposing an “entity self” for the West and a “phenomenal self” for Korea instead.

Because cultural psychology studies different things with a different epistemology, its methods must differ too — so judging its quality by experimental psychology’s “precise vs. crude” yardstick is a mistake.

Background

Experimental psychology tried to understand humans in a cultural “vacuum,” and the recent turn toward culture in psychology is, in the authors’ view, an effort to fill that gap.

Yet mainstream psychologists have avoided cultural psychology as lacking scientific precision and unfit for seeking universal theories. The authors hold that the two fields are wrongly seen as opposed, and wrote this paper to show they are mutually supportive.

Compares three branches of psychology that deal with culture (cross-cultural, indigenous, and cultural psychology) and discusses four kinds of methods for cultural psychology: (1) experimental, (2) social-representation analysis, (3) everyday-language analysis, and (4) analysis of social activity.

Detailed findings

Of the three branches, cross-cultural psychology shares the same epistemology (basic assumptions about how knowledge is gained) as experimental psychology.

이 분야의 연구가 지닌 인식론적 특성은 실험심리학의 그것과 같다The epistemological features of research in this field are the same as those of experimental psychology.p3

Indigenous psychology is aware that psychological principles are products of Western culture, and seeks a “decolonization of the mind.”

심리학 원리의 서구문화적 특성을 의식하고 “미음의 탈식민지화"Conscious of the Western-cultural character of psychological principles, [it pursues] the “decolonization of the mind.”p3

What sets cultural psychology apart from indigenous psychology is that it takes both the insider’s and the outsider’s perspective.

문화심리학은 내부자의 관점과 의부자의 관점을 모두 취한다는 것이다…is that cultural psychology takes both the insider’s and the outsider’s perspectives.p4

The stimuli used in cultural-psychology experiments are not stimuli defined in physical form or along a single dimension, as in experimental psychology, but cultural stimuli “pickled and fermented” in culture.

In a study comparing three ways of eliciting ideas about han (한, 恨), the third — having people pick one person full of han and describe their relationship with that person — drew the most concrete and vivid responses.

Words carry more than their surface meaning: someone reaching for a shelf who says “if only I were a bit taller” also conveys a request to get the item down, and something about the relationship.

Studying Korea’s representative cultural concepts (simjeong, jeong, han, we-ness, chemyeon, nunchi, pinggye, etc.) means analyzing the contexts in which those words are expressed and used to draw out the psychology inside them.

Authors’ interpretation

Cultural psychology’s criticism aims to bring forgotten parts of the human mind back into research — not to replace existing psychology.

잊혀졌던 인간정신의 중요한 부분을 연구대상으로 부각시키기 위함이지, 기존의 심리학을 대체하겠디는 것은 아니다…is to bring forgotten but important parts of the human mind forward as objects of research, not to replace existing psychology.p16

Cultural psychologists should switch perspectives back and forth, like swapping between two lenses — subjective and objective.

As in the attempt by Korean, Chinese, and Japanese scholars to analyze and compare jeong (情) independently, the concepts needed to understand differences among the three countries — long lumped together as “collectivist” — can come from East Asia’s own native concepts.

Limits the authors note

The authors admit that cultural psychology’s methods are not yet developed enough to back up the paradigm shift it claims.

패러다임적 전환(전통짐리학의 패러다임에 반하는)을 뒷받침할 정도로 발달되어 있지 못한…not developed enough to support the paradigm shift (against the paradigm of traditional psychology)…p2

They also admit that, at its current level, cultural psychology does not yet produce high-quality data.

현재의 수준에서는 문화심리학의 내용이 고급수준의 자료를 생산해 내는데는 미치지 못한다고 할지라도…even if, at the current level, the content of cultural psychology falls short of producing high-quality data…p12

Key terms

Narrative mode of thinking Unlike logical, abstract “paradigmatic” thinking, a story-like way of thinking that is concrete and varies by situation — focused on relationships between people and the intentions behind actions.

Social representations The frameworks people use to make sense of the world — a body of knowledge shared within a society that helps its members communicate.
