Unlike Japanese students, Korean students showed unrealistic optimism — "bad things are less likely to happen to me than to others" — and this was linked to a strong independent view of self.
The Relationship between Unrealistic Optimism and Independent-Interdependent Construals of Self in Korean Culture
QUESTION
Using Korean university students, does the assumed link between unrealistic optimism and independent vs. interdependent views of self actually hold?

Background
In an earlier study (Heine and Lehman), Canadian students showed unrealistic optimism — believing bad things were less likely to happen to them than to others — while Japanese students instead showed unrealistic pessimism.
Unrealistic optimism was found among Canadian students, whereas among Japanese students unrealistic [pessimism was found].p2Heine와 Lehman(1995)은 서 구인으로서 상호독립적 자기관이 우세하다고 알려진 캐나다 대학생과Heine and Lehman (1995) [compared] Canadian students, known as Westerners with a dominant independent self-view, and…p2개나다 대학생처럼 비슷한 조건의 다인들에 비해서 부정적인 사건들은 자신에게 더 적게 일어날 것이라는 신념…like Canadian students, the belief that negative events will happen less to oneself than to similar othersp10들은 비현실적 낙관성을, 일본 대학생들은 비현실적 인 비관성을 보였다…[Canadian students] showed unrealistic optimism, and Japanese students showed unrealistic pessimism.p7The study began from a question: would Korean students, also in East Asia, share the Japanese interdependent self and show pessimism?
Would Korean students, who belong to the same Eastern cultural sphere, also have an interdependent view of self like Japanese students, and therefore show unrealistic pessimism?p2Method
A survey of Korean students, whose results were compared with Japanese and Canadian student data from an earlier study that used the same scale.

By event type, optimism about personal events was stronger than about relational events — a pattern similar to Canadian students.
In particular, unrealistic optimism about individual-oriented events was stronger than about relationship-oriented events.p10이것은 캐나다 대학생들이 보인 패턴과 유사한 것이다This is similar to the pattern shown by Canadian students.p10Students were also optimistic about bad things happening to their family, but contrary to expectations, not as strongly as about themselves.
가족관련 사건에 대한 비현실적 낙관성 편향도 보였으나, 예상과는 달리 개인지향적 사건에 대한 비현실적 낙관성 편향만큼 강하지는 않았다…also showed an unrealistic optimism bias for family-related events, but contrary to expectations it was not as strong as for individual-oriented events.p10Like Japanese students, Koreans felt relational events were more controllable — but their overall sense of control was higher than that of both Japanese and Canadian students.

For individual-oriented events (r=.35, p<.01) and relationship-oriented events (r=.43, p<.01), the greater the sense of control, the greater the unrealistic optimism.p11On all four sub-areas of self-view (assertiveness, individual awareness/assertion, concern for evaluation, affiliation/conformity), Korean students scored higher than Japanese students.
“독단성”, “개인 인식 주장", “평가염려", “친화 • 순응"이라는 모든 하위 영역의 수준이 일본 대학생들보다 높은 것으로…the levels of all sub-areas — "assertiveness," "individual awareness/assertion," "concern for evaluation," and "affiliation/conformity" — were higher than those of Japanese students.p12Controlling for the other self-view, a stronger independent self went with greater optimism about personal and relational events.
상호독립적 자기관과 비현실적 낙관성간에는 정적 상관이 있는 것으로 나타났다(개인지향적 사건 r=.27, p<.01•, 관계지향적 사건 r=.18, p<05)A positive correlation appeared between the independent view of self and unrealistic optimism (individual-oriented events r=.27, p<.01; relationship-oriented events r=.18, p<.05).p12다른 자원의 자기관을 통제 한 편상관을 알아봤다…examined partial correlations controlling for the other dimension of self-construal.p12Students with higher self-esteem and life satisfaction were more optimistic, read as mentally healthy people bending reality in their own favor.

Among Christians, no such rationalizing mechanism based on the illusion of personal control appeared.p15무종교인의 경우 부정적 사건에 대한 통제감을 느낄 수록 비현실척 낙관성이 높아지는데…for non-religious people, the more control they felt over negative events, the higher their unrealistic optimism…p15기독교인의 경우는 통제감과 비현 실적 낙관성과는 상관이 없었다…for Christians, control and unrealistic optimism were not correlated.p15Authors’ interpretation
Japanese pessimism arises not because the interdependent self is strong but because the independent self is weak; Koreans show optimism because, alongside a strong interdependent self, their independent self is also strong.
Unrealistic pessimism appeared in Japan not because the interdependent view of self is strong but because the independent view of self is weak…p14한국에서는(상호협조적 자 기관이 강하지만) 상호독립적 자기관도 상당히 강하 기 때문에 비현실적 낙관성이 나타난 것으로 이해된…in Korea, unrealistic optimism appeared because (though the interdependent self-view is strong) the independent self-view is also quite strong…p14Being so conscious of others' judgment that one cannot act naturally may mark a highly relational person in Japan, but a person lacking individuality in Korea (still to be tested).
한국에서는 개별성(상호독립식 자기관)이 부족한 사람의 특징인 것을 의미한다…in Korea, it means a characteristic of a person who lacks individuality (an independent view of self).p14타인을 지나치게 의식하고 자기에 대한 평가를 염려 해서 자연스러운 행동을 못하는 것은 일본에서는 주 로 강한 상호협조적 자기관(관계성)을Being overly conscious of others and worrying about evaluation so that one cannot act naturally is, in Japan, mainly [a trait of those with] a strong interdependent self-view (relatedness)…p14두 개의 척도를 한일간에서 교차 해서 사용하고 추출되는 요인구조를 비교하는 것을 통해 검증되이야 한다…should be tested by cross-using the two scales in Korea and Japan and comparing the extracted factor structures.p14Everyone defends themselves against the threat of bad events, but which defense they choose depends on their worldview.
